Belted Kingfisher, underexposed by 4 stops, hand held 300mm. Trying to travel lighter I left the the tripod home. I had the camera on manual exposure still, 1/1000s, f3.5, iso400 as I approached the pond. This guy started flying around and I started shooting. It wasn't until he had flown away that I noticed I was shooting black images. None the less, I have never seen one of these before. I almost didn't go into the park today, thinking I wouldn't seen anything new. Ever wrong about the park, I see something new about every 5th trip in.
Minutes after mis-shooting this guy I hiked north along a creek side trail. I must have woken the red tail hawk and turkey vulture because they came screaming toward me, headed south. I mis-shot that too, bracing the lens by holding the focus ring, thereby fighting the autofocus and missing the shot. I should probably sleep in more often.
